Nothing beats the freshness of fruits and vegetables grown in our little corner of the country. June sees the first significant yield of local produce and the results are downright delicious. Here is some of the locally grown, organic produce you’ll find in our stores right now. Stay tuned as the summer bounty increases!

Fava beans

Known as broad beans in Britain, favas offer a flavor that is smoother, sweeter and richer than most other beans. Getting to their sweet pods requires a bit of work: They have to be peeled twice — first shucked from their pods and then popped out of their skin after being boiled. It’s worth the effort, though, as you’ll be rewarded with a tender treat high in protein and dietary fiber and other essential nutrients.

Leaf lettuce

At just four calories per cup, leaf lettuce — especially local, robust bunches — are the perfect base for salads of all sorts. Wash and dry the leaves before storing in the refrigerator to increase their longevity.

The crown jewel of June produce, local strawberries provide sweet, juicy flavor and are packed with antioxidants and vitamin C. To keep berries fresh longer, store the ruby red gems in the refrigerator, and don’t wash them until you’re ready to devour them.


Kale and chard

While classified as “winter greens,” kale and chard are at their best in Washington during early summer when local bunches are available. Gorgeous, hearty leaves offer a spectrum of nutrients, including vitamins A, B6, C and K.


Portobello mushrooms

Rich and meaty, these larger, mature crimini mushrooms have a dense, earthy flavor that makes them a great option for grilling. Plus they’re a good source of fiber and other nutrients to boot.
