Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried dates, preferably pitted
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1 cup blanched almonds
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon shredded coconut (optional)

Directions

Place pitted dates, cardamom and orange zest in a food processor and chop to form a course paste. If you do not have a food processor, chop finely with a knife.

Take small pieces of paste and roll to make small balls, like meatballs (wet your hands to keep them from sticking). Enclose 1 or more almonds in the middle of each ball. Roll some of the balls in sesame seeds and some in coconut, or choose just one or the other.

Store in a sealed container at room temperature until ready to serve.
