Gluten-free Ale-lujah!

It wasn’t so long ago that a gluten-intolerant diagnosis amounted to a sentence of life without beer. The few gluten-free brews available bore only the faintest resemblance to quality beer and were ridiculously expensive compared to their “real” beer counterparts.

Happily, necessity is the mother of invention and innovative brewers, using millet, rice, buckwheat, sorghum, corn, oats (and even chestnuts) as ingredients, are creating gluten-free beers that not only are more affordable but are downright delicious.

Look for tasty ales from Harvester Brewing, New Planet, New Grist and Bard’s in all PCC stores, as well as Widmer Brothers “Omission” and Estrella “Daura” in stores with larger beer selections. You’ll find an array of enticing ciders (all gluten-free), too!

The return of Copper River

Kicking off the fresh salmon season, Copper River salmon is known for its high oil content, stored up from the salmon’s long journey along the nearly 300-mile Alaskan Copper River. That extra oil results in a tender, moist fish that is perfect for the grill. Low in calories and saturated fat yet high in protein and omega-3 essential fatty acids, salmon supports healthy heart and brain function.

Add it to your dinnertime rotation — try Grilled Wild Salmon with Coriander and Sweet Chili Glaze, Wild Salmon Banh Mi Sandwiches or Wild Salmon with Pan-seared Apricots and Summer Berries. Find these recipes and more.
