Supporting healthy communities is just as important to us as supporting good nutrition and wholesome foods. From parades and concerts to fairs and bike drives, we connect with the local community at numerous neighborhood events, introducing healthy foods in fun, creative ways. Come on out and join us in August — we’d love to see you!

 

Summer Concerts at Hiawatha

Every Thursday throughout August
August 2, 9, 16, 23, 30

6:30 to 8 p.m., Hiawatha Playfield,
2700 California Ave. S.W., Seattle

The Admiral Neighborhood Association’s free summer concert series features a great lineup of local musicians for the whole family to enjoy. On your way to the show, stop by West Seattle PCC — located directly across the street — and pick up dinner from the PCC Deli. The Kid Picks Mobile will be at the concert taste-testing healthy treats for kids. Visit admiralneighborhood.org to view the schedule of bands playing.

 

Alaffia Bike Drive

Saturday, August 11

West Seattle PCC

Since 2008, PCC and its customers have helped Alaffia Sustainable Skin Care in Olympia, Wash., collect bikes as part of Alaffia’s Bicycles for Education program, which distributes bicycles to disadvantaged students in Togo, West Africa.

This year, you can donate functioning, adult-size bicycles at two of our stores. Learn more about Alaffia and its bike program.

 

Rainier Valley Heritage Parade

Saturday, August 18
11 a.m.

Look for the Kid Picks Mobile in this parade that runs along Rainier Ave. S. between S. Alaska St. and S. Brandon St. in Seattle. We’ll be handing out treats along the way. Summer Streets will follow, allowing people to stroll, bike, shop and just enjoy being in their community.

Big Day of Play

Saturday, August 25
10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Magnuson Park,
7400 Sand Point Way, N.E., Seattle

PCC once again joins forces with Seattle Parks and Recreation Department for Big Day of Play. Families will have the chance to try out a wide variety of activities the city’s community centers and parks have to offer. Activities will include a flag football tournament, kids run, 3-on-3 basketball, water sports, golf and dance. Participants can earn a “PCC buck” for each activity they try and redeem them for a sample of a nutritious food item such as roasted corn, salad, fresh fruit and iced tea. The Kid Picks Mobile also will be onsite to help kids assemble a healthy trail mix from scratch. Learn more at seattle.gov/parks/healthyparks/big_day.htm.

 

Big Truck Day

Friday, August 31
Noon to 3 p.m., Farrel-McWhirter Park,
19545 Redmond Rd., Redmond

Kids can learn about dump trucks, backhoes, concrete mixers and other large vehicles found in the community at this big event. The Kid Picks Mobile also will be there taste-testing foods. The entrance fee is $12. Register in advance at redmond.gov, class number 40174.
