Ingredients

  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup unbleached, granulated sugar
  • 1 cup assorted fresh or frozen berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries)
  • 4 cups shaved or crushed ice

Directions

In a saucepan, combine the water and sugar. Heat to a boil until the sugar is completed dissolved. Add the berries and let the mixture cool to room temperature. Add the berry mixture to a blender and puree. Work in 2 batches, if necessary. You may strain the mixture if there are a lot of seeds.

To serve: Mound 1 cup shaved ice into a bowl and pour 6 to 8 tablespoons of the berry syrup over the top. Serve immediately.

To make crushed ice: Place several ice cubes in a blender and blend on high until the ice is crushed. Alternately use a shaved ice machine, a hand-cranked ice crusher or put ice cubes in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin.

Special notes:

For a less sugary, healthier alternative: Blend 2 cups fresh or frozen berries (thawed), strain and use this no sugar-added syrup to make your shaved ice.
