Healthy Kids Cook: New Local Nutrition Series!

2014 News

Seattle, Wash., September 24, 2014 — PCC Natural Markets (PCC) and ParentMap have partnered to create a highly engaging web video series designed to help parents and their children explore new, healthy and adventurous food horizons at home together. The premise of the series is basic but powerful: Families will eat healthier if they learn to shop for and cook fresh food together, especially when they are educated about the nutritional basis of their food shopping and cooking choices along the way.

In an age when obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, teaching healthy eating habits is essential to the well-being of children and families. Each episode of Healthy Kids Cook is framed around a featured seasonal fruit or vegetable and is hosted by PCC chef, recipe and food stylist Jackie Freeman. Each episode invites a family into the PCC kitchen to learn about and prepare a new kid-friendly recipe corresponding to the featured seasonal/monthly fresh produce.

In conjunction with the how-to/cooking demonstration and discovery of new seasonal fruits and vegetables, Jackie incorporates relevant nutrition information related to the focus of the episode, as appropriate; this information is included in a fun manner intended to intrigue kids and parents to learn more about their food, where it comes from, and the social benefits of cooking together.

Did you know … ?

  • That bananas don’t grow on trees, they grow on herbs? And that a banana is actually a berry?
  • That over a billion pounds of strawberries are grown in California each year, and if all of them were laid berry to berry, they would stretch around the world 15 times?
  • That a mature mango tree can grow as tall as 100 feet and bear fruit for 300 years, or that mangoes can be as small as an egg or as big as a football?
  • That you can get a whole meal’s worth of nutrition from a single one-cup serving of kale?

Well Chef Jackie sure knows, and each of her healthy cooking lessons is a romp of foodie-fun discovery. She is not only a fruit and vegetable whisperer, she is a child whisperer, capable of encouraging her child chefs to learn cooking skills and the occasional kitchen song or happy-dance.
