PCC Natural Markets to open new store

2011 News

(Seattle, Wash., April 27, 2011) — PCC Natural Markets (PCC), the nation’s largest natural foods retail cooperative, will open its 10th location in late 2013.

PCC has signed a long-term lease to occupy a new mixed-use project — currently referred to as Green Lake Village — located between N.E. 72nd Street and N.E. 71st Street along Woodlawn Avenue N.E. and 5th Avenue N.E. in the Green Lake community of north Seattle, Wash. The three-acre site is owned by the operators of the Vitamilk Dairy, a family-owned company that closed in 2003 after 63 years in business. Additional excavation and design work are under way with ground breaking targeted for Winter 2011.

The new development will feature residential and retail space, as well as public areas and underground parking. It will include approximately 295 apartments in five stories. The new PCC will occupy about 25,000 square feet of 55,000 square feet of retail space below the residential floors. PCC is expected to employ about 130 full and part-time employees at the new store.

“PCC is thrilled to be part of this exciting project in such a vibrant neighborhood.” said Tracy Wolpert, PCC’s CEO. “We will continue to serve the greater Green Lake community from our store on Aurora Ave. N., but this new development will bring our offering of fresh, natural and organic foods to the area’s central hub.”

“We welcome PCC Natural Markets as an anchor retail tenant,” said Daryl Vander Pol of the Vitamilk family. “PCC has a solid reputation for operating beautiful and successful stores, and for being a good neighbor and partner in all the communities it serves.”

The same team of professionals behind PCC’s most recent stores in Edmonds, Wash. (2008), Redmond, Wash. (2006) and in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood (2003) will be involved in PCC’s new store, and includes Seattle-based Velocipede Architects and Woodman Construction.

The new PCC will incorporate many of the environmentally-friendly features and practices of the company’s Edmonds and Redmond stores, which earned LEED Platinum and LEED Gold certifications, respectively. LEED is a distinction awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council for excellence in building design and operation.

The development manager of the Green Lake Village project is Lorig Associates.
