Join us to learn about Orca whales with the Center for Whale Research! Since 1976, the Center for Whale Research has been the leading organization studying the Southern Resident killer whales in their critical habitat: the Salish Sea. Based on data collected by the Center for Whale Research, you will learn about the fascinating behavior, ecology, foraging patterns, and complex social lives of the Southern Resident Killer Whales — the key role that grandmothers play and why killer whales go through menopause. This iconic population frequents our local waters where their primary food source (salmon) is dwindling. They are now on the endangered species list and are at risk of extinction — what can be done to save them?
About the instructor: Dr. Darren Croft, Executive Director of the Center for Whale Research and Professor at the University of Exeter, has published over 150 scientific papers and is internationally known for his research on the social behavior of killer whales. Darren has worked on research projects ranging from small freshwater fish (guppies) in the rain forest streams of Trinidad, to African Elephants in Botswana, banded mongoose in Uganda, and our local community of Southern Resident killer whales which has been the primary focus of his research for over a decade.
