PCC Community Markets Builds on Support for Native Communities This Thanksgiving

2025 News

Seattle, November 6, 2025 – PCC Community Markets (PCC), a 72-year-old retail grocery cooperative and the largest food co-op in the U.S., will again join more than 160 food co-ops across the country on Thanksgiving to support Native food systems. This marks the second year in a row PCC has participated in this national campaign.

National campaign

Thanksgiving is the biggest holiday of the year for the grocery industry, and food co-ops across the country will mark the occasion by reflecting on the legacy of colonization associated with the holiday while uplifting Native perspectives. Throughout November, National Co-op Grocers (NCG)—of which PCC is a member—is partnering with NATIFS (North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems), a nonprofit dedicated to addressing economic and health disparities in Native communities through food-focused initiatives. NCG will donate 5 cents to NATIFS for every Field Day product sold across 161 food co-ops nationwide.

Back for its second year, NCG’s annual Thanksgiving fundraising campaign was inspired by PCC’s initiative in 2024, in which PCC donated proceeds of sales to United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (UIATF). After hearing about PCC’s local efforts, NCG launched a national campaign, in which co-ops across 39 states collectively raised more than $140,000 for NATIFS.

“Thanksgiving is a time to reflect with gratitude, while also recognizing the history of colonization this day represents,” said Mike Wenrick, Director of Purpose at PCC. “It’s an opportunity to honor the leadership, cultures and ongoing contributions of Indigenous communities that continue to guide us forward. We’re honored to be a part of this campaign for a second year.”

Local support

In addition to this year’s national campaign, PCC will make a $15,000 donation to UIATF, extending a community partnership that began in 2019. Over the years, the two organizations have partnered on grocery donations, fundraising, storytelling initiatives and events at the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center. PCC has also collaborated with UIATF on a tote bag designed by Pacific Northwest-based Indigenous artist Heather Johnston, which was available at PCC and UIATF stores.

“Our long-standing partnership with PCC is a powerful example of what a commitment to supporting Indigenous-led organizations can look like,” said Dr. Michael Tulee, CEO of UIATF. “Since 2019, PCC’s advocacy and allyship have significantly broadened our reach, helping us continue to provide vital educational, cultural and social services to Native peoples of all ages.”
