Hearty greens

There’s no denying it — we love to use kale and chard in many of our deli salads. These hearty, nutritious greens provide a fantastic base for a variety of flavor profiles while holding up well; you don’t have to worry about them wilting on the car ride home or en route to the park. Plus they don’t weigh much, making them a good value amongst our prepared foods. In September, locally grown bunches of kale and chard are particularly gorgeous and robust, making these greens a prime ingredient in the PCC Deli. Choose from our popular Emerald City Salad, Methow Valley Salad, Artichoke and Greens Salad, and Hearty Greens Caesar. You’ll also find a rotating selection of seasonal dishes that incorporate these superstar veggies.

 

In the produce department

Keitt Mangoes & Thomcord Grapes

Don’t miss out on organic large Keitt mangoes grown in California’s Coachella Valley. According to PCC produce merchandiser Joe Hardiman, these are “the best mangoes of the year.” Huge in size and deep dark green in color, Keitt (rhymes with Pete) mangoes have a bright, tangy flavor. Try our recipe for a Mango Lassi. Also check out Thomcord grapes from Heinke Family Farm in Paradise, Calif. A cross between Green Thompson and Concord grapes, these phenomenal, dark-purple gems have the aromatic flavor of the Concord but are seedless thanks to their Thompson side.

 

Coming into season

Locally grown organic apples and pears. Look for Honeycrisp and Gala apples and Bosc pears from River Valley Organics in Tonasket, Wash., as well as Bartlett pears from Scott Leach Orchards in Zillah, Wash.

 

Last chance for

Organic corn, locally grown by Zorn Farms in St. Paul, Ore., and Rents Due Ranch in Stanwood, Wash. Also locally grown, organic heirloom tomatoes from Pride of the Umpqua in Roseburg, Ore.
