What’s causing crisis levels of hunger?
While SNAP and WIC benefits are flowing again, the need in our region remains at crisis levels. Hunger relief organizations across Washington continue to see record demand, well above pre-shutdown levels, as families struggle with the lasting impacts of rising food costs, reduced donations and months of instability in federal support.
For many households, especially those with young children, seniors, immigrant or low-income workers, the temporary disruption only compounded existing gaps in our food system. Food banks and meal programs are still stretched thin, working hard to keep up with the volume of neighbors seeking help.
