Less plastic packaging

I was very happy to find the Earthbound Farms Organic Spring Mix in cardboard packaging in the Bellevue or Kirkland PCC stores. However, I was unable to find it at the Bothell store.

There is no reason for you to carry products in plastic packaging when your vendors have shown that they can have much more sustainable packaging. Please have the Earthbound Farm packaged greens in cardboard packaging in every store.

PCC replies: Thank you for writing and for supporting sustainable packaging! Cardboard packaging is part of a new program with Earthbound, and supplies are limited, so you may not see them at every location just yet. Our merchandisers are excited to bring in more of these products when available and are continuing to develop other new options — stay tuned for more news soon. In recent years we have added more cardboard containers for bulk produce and our newer suppliers include sustainably-minded vendors such as Hop Frog Farm, a small, certified organic Washington farm that packages its microgreens in compostable containers with compostable labels. Also, the twist ties and tags on many produce items, along with scannable produce packaging, are also now recyclable in a pilot program at the Redmond, Ballard, West Seattle, Burien and Green Lake Village PCC stores. We are continuing to seek out sustainable packaging and appreciate your feedback.

Protein powder reports

There are recent reports of lead and cadmium in protein powders. Do you know if the PCC bulk vegan powder has been tested? What is the source of the product? Thanks.

PCC replies: Thank you for your question about PCC’s bulk vegan protein powder.

We understand and share your concerns regarding the multitude of studies that regularly report heavy metal contamination in various foods and supplements. The most recent study of plant-based protein powders, from the Clean Label Project is yet another of many that add to the volume of literature supporting what we already know — that heavy metal contamination is pervasive and a global issue that needs to be addressed through the collective efforts of lawmakers, government agencies, global health authorities, manufacturers, farmers, and retailers.

The Clean Label Project report did not reveal which brands they tested, so we cannot determine whether brands PCC sells were part of the analysis. We recommend reaching out to brands directly because it is important for manufacturers to hear from the people who buy their products if they have concerns about their testing practices or quality.

PCC sets high standards and sourcing priorities for our supplement products, including protein powders. We prohibit many additives like artificial dyes and flavorings, and prioritize clean ingredient items with fewer unnecessary binders, thickeners, and flow agents. We also require products to be produced following Current Good Manufacturing Practices or have the NSF International Certification for quality. We also value third party certifications that help provide assurances to customers about the quality, ingredients, production methods, and more. PCC does not have the capacity to conduct our own independent testing of all our products.

We always encourage shoppers to choose what they feel comfortable consuming and if you have concerns regarding health impacts, we’d encourage you to talk with your physician or a nutrition specialist, especially as heavy metal contamination is a known issue in the environment and not isolated to specific products or brands.

Whole grain sorghum

Hi, this is a product request. Whole grain sorghum is tasty and has a very favorable blood sugar profile, and is of course gluten-free. Bob’s Red Mill packages it in 2-pound bags, or it could be offered in bulk. It’s hard to find as culturally it’s not a customary grain, but it’s actually pretty great. Thanks for considering!

PCC replies: Thank you for suggesting adding whole grain sorghum to our shelves or bulk bins! We will send the request on to our merchandisers. It is indeed a great grain and is part of our gluten-free flour blend recipe. PCC stores do sell sorghum flour in 2-pound packages from Bob’s Red Mill. While we don’t currently stock whole sorghum grains, they can be special-ordered by the case — which in this case would be four 2-pound bags — at any PCC store.
