  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup turbinado or brown sugar
  • 6 large tart apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 6 to 10 slices firm bread
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • Powered sugar or syrup, for serving (optional)

Preheat oven to 350° F. Lightly oil a 9- by 13-inch baking dish.

In a large sauté pan, melt butter. Add sugar and apples and cook over medium heat 1 to 2 minutes. Pour into prepared baking dish and set aside to cool.

Slice bread slices in half diagonally, and place in one layer over apples to cover the whole dish.

In a large bowl, beat together eggs, milk and vanilla. Pour mixture over all, making sure all the bread is moistened. Sprinkle with cinnamon.

Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until golden brown and puffy. Let cool for 10 minutes. Cut into squares and serve with powdered sugar or your favorite syrup.
