For many, food is an essential part of celebrating Juneteenth the holiday that commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the U.S. Join Donna Moodie, owner of Seattle restaurant Marjorie, for a special Juneteenth-themed class with 100% of the proceeds benefitting Black-led Byrd Barr Place and M.U.S.T. (Mentoring Urban Students & Teens). On this important day, Donna will cook the dishes that she grew up with, including Jamaican Jerk Chicken (tofu option available) and Mashed Yams. Shell also speak about the significance of having red on the table for Juneteenth as she shares her recipe for a ruby-hued Hibiscus Cooler.
Dietary Notes: With poultry; vegetarian option.
About the instructor: Born in Jamaica and raised in Chicago, Donna grew up in the kitchen, learning about home cooking and gracious hospitality from her mother Marjorie. In 1993, Donna moved to Seattle and established herself as a trailblazing restaurateur before opening Marjorie Restaurant to pay homage to her mother's lifelong inspiration. In 2010 she relocated the restaurant from Belltown to Seattle's vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood where locals and out-of-towners flock for her eclectic menu and signature plantains. Donna has also grown increasingly active in Seattle civic life, serving as mayor-appointed commissioner for Seattle Center and EVP of Community Development with Community Roots Housing (formerly Capitol Hill Housing).
