Statement About Diestel Family Turkey Ranch

2017 News

November 21, 2017

In the past several days, we’ve received inquiries about two separate allegations against Diestel Family Turkey Ranch. One resurfaced claims from 2015 about the farm’s treatment of its animals. The other is about a suit filed recently suggesting the farm is falsely advertising its turkeys as being humanely treated and sustainably raised.

We take allegations of poor animal treatment against Diestel or any of our partners very seriously. We perform animal welfare audits regularly with our meat suppliers to ensure they’re upholding our co-op’s animal welfare standards (here).

In the past week, our merchandising team has been in direct contact with Heidi Diestel to confirm that Diestel turkeys continue to meet PCC’s high animal welfare standards. Based on everything we know about Diestel — including our own visits to their farms and what they have shared with us in writing — staff, shoppers and members should be assured that they do. You can find the farm’s statement about the claims from 2015 here, and a more recent statement about the pending suit here.

Diestel also encourages concerned shoppers to contact them directly (info@diestelturkey.com or 209-532-4950), and they’ve extended an open invitation to anyone who wants to visit their farms to check conditions first-hand.

PCC will continue to promptly look in to any indications that our suppliers are not meeting our high quality and animal welfare standards. We feel confident you can rest assured that your Diestel turkey from PCC does.
